Taco al Carbon

IMG_0467

I love tacos. I especially love Taco Tuesdays! It has become such a big concept and everyone who serves up tacos puts out great deals for this day. Backyard Taco is a popular spot here in the Valley that serves up tacos al carbon. “al carbon” means to cook over charcoal and are very popular in Mexico. I was introduced to this place when I ate here with my foodie group a few years back. Backyard Taco was started by Ruben and Maricela from Mazatlan. Their business was birth from cooking tacos in their backyard for friends and neighbors. So hospitality and making customers feel at home is a big part of their business. They use fresh simple ingredients along with their amazing selection of meats to create the authentic taste of Tacos al Carbon. I love it when you walk into the lobby and get a glimpse (and smell) of the meat grilling on their mesquite grill. I came by for lunch and sampled a few of my favorite tacos – Carne Asada, Pollo and Al Pastor. Of course I grabbed a horchata to wash it all down. They also do quesadillas, burritos, tostadas, gorditas and a crazy potato. My favorite thing about Backyard Taco is the condiment bar which has a variety of salsas, onions, limes and jalapeños for toppings. Lunch was delicious and affordable as always and made for another fun Taco Tuesday.

Old Fashioned

We had a wonderful time at Chelsea’s Kitchen. It’s been on my bucket list to dine here for some time now. First of all, I love the atmosphere and overall feel of this place as you walk in. It’s designed to look like a one-story ranch house, with a peaked roof, a huge porch, and a large patio area out back with a brick fireplace. Chelsea’s Kitchen is part of LGO hospitality (a group of restaurants that puts a modern twist on American comfort food operated by founder Bob Lynn) and is located in the beautiful Arcadia district. They specialize in big, flavorful portions and create their dishes fresh daily. There are several locations throughout California and Arizona (I’m a frequent visitor to La Grande Orange). We started our night out with some of their fancy cocktails. I’ve been on whiskey kick and got their Old Fashioned (the drunken cherries were a nice add) and my date got the Diego Rivera. I heard so much about their awards winning Short Rib Tacos and couldn’t pass them up. The braised meat was delicious and tender and there was plenty to eat. My date is from Mexico City and she had their Seafood & Jidori Chicken Paella. It was a nice blend of chicken, shrimp and clams and she loved very bite. The service was excellent and the experience was definitely was worth the wait. They have complimentary valet parking and reduced prices on their happy menu. They also have $12 endless mimosas on Saturday afternoons.

Backyard Taco

Steak/Carne Asada Quesadilla

Hi Foodies, tonight we travel south of the border to a local taco “stand” that is a favorite of many in the community. It started out as a true taco stand in the backyard of a home and as it grew in popularity with the neighbors and locals and finally outgrew its backyard roots. After searching for a new “official” restaurant site, and gaining an investor this once small taco stand has grown into a full restaurant.

It doesn’t get more authentic than this. My Tuesday night foodie group chose Backyard Taco as our evening food destination. One of the things I love about AZ is the great Mexican food we have here. You can smell the Tacos al Carbon grilling as you walk up. They serve up fresh ingredients and have a great salsa bar. Eating the tacos here make me wish I was in Mexico chilling on the beach eating some yummy street food. Taco Tuesdays are $1.25 tacos during happy hour times. Great find!

Día de los Muertos

IMG_1111

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated throughout Mexico and other parts of the world. It is a day for friends and families to remember those that have died. It takes place November 1 and 2. Some traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. There are also parades and festivals that end at cemeteries in which families pray for the deceased. Desert Botanical Garden honors this holiday with festivities and music. Also on display was Philip Haas’ The Four Seasons – four giant monumental sculptures. Each season is represented by each of the imaginative portraits composed of fruits, vegetables, flowers and related objects.

Casa de Reyes

Casa de Reyes is one of my favorite stops in San Diego. It is part of Fiesta de Reyes, a dining and shopping experience located in the heart of Old Town (the birthplace of San Diego). The original Mexican pueblo was established in 1821. There is live music and beautiful art in the plaza. Casa de Reyes is an outdoor restaurant that serves up traditional Mexican fare with flare. I ordered the Dos Beef Tacos platter and a Reyna’s sangria. It was delicious and filled me up for the evening.

Backstreet Dogs

I love Conrado’s Backstreet dogs! He sells them outside the Weekend Missions building (Villa Granada) in the evenings for $1 down in Rocky Point. It’s his way to reach out into the community around this awesome ministry. He will help out the homeless that come his way and feed them as well. The dogs are delicious. He wraps them with bacon and tops them off with grilled onions and hot sauce. Amazing! We had some fun nights hanging out around his stand chowing down on these awesome dogs.
