For St. Patrick’s Day, I decided to run a Kilt Run. I have been on this kick to start running again and my Uncle Joel told me about this one. This event is part of the Kiss Me I’m Irish run events that go on all weekend to celebrate St. Patty’s Day. The Kilt Run supports the The American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Kiss Me I’m Irish Run supports the Prostate On Site Project. This was the 1st annual Kilt Run for these guys. It’s a 1K family fun run and it took place on the plaza of Westgate Entertainment District. You get a kilt, a finisher’s medal and a beer at the nearby McFadden’s after you finish the run. I was excited to get my first ever medal in a run event. Before the run, I fueled up by making a Guinness Shepherd’s Pie at home earlier in the day. Afterwards, I met up with my uncle and his girlfriend at McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon for a beer. The place was crazy crowded but still fun to be around everyone having a good time. I had a good time for my first run of the year and hope to keep it going.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

IMG_0608.jpg

After two knee surgeries in the past four years to repair a torn meniscus in both knees, I am running my first race since 2011. In fact, I tore my first knee in that run (Pat’s Run) in 2011 and haven’t ran since. Today I am running the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure run in downtown Phoenix. I have run this race in the past and have enjoyed it. It’s a good one because the weather is nice and cool in October here in AZ. I am hoping I can restart this running journey again that I started years ago. I found a good running pace for myself on the treadmill and my job is to finish and not be concerned with time. My FitbyFirst program has been instrumental in my training and getting back in shape.

The Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure is part of the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. Up to 75% of the net proceeds raised stays in the local community to fund breast cancer programs and at least 25% supports Susan G. Komen‘s national grants program to fund research (info from their website). I am happy I am able to run this race to benefit his cause.

Neon Splash Dash

IMG_0793A bunch of us ran in the Neon Splash Dash at Firebird Raceway. It’s a fun 5K race that is very similar to the Blue Man Group show in Vegas. You run through 4 different Glow Zones, where at each one you get sprayed with a different color of U.V. glow paint. Then there is an After Glow party afterwards where you glow with the backlight. They have live bands and continue to spray the crowd with paint as you dance the night away. I had a blast with my friends running the race and hanging out afterwards at the party.
